I am aware of the controversy surrounding feeding human food to dogs and cats. But we all do it. And when you live with a chef, things can get a little out of control. For him, all recipes become a project; and usually I’m the recipient of the result, which is awesome.
Then came the faithful morning when I came back from taking the pooches out for their morning tinkle and breathed in the delicious aroma of omelets. Expecting an epic breakfast surprise, I quickly unleashed the beasts and headed to the kitchen, where the boyfriend indeed was putting the finishing touches on a perfect golden omelet. An omelet filled with delicioius, savory…dog kibble.
Not what I had in mind.

Yes, this perfect golden buttery omelet was for the pooches. Mommy got squat.

My father used to feed eggs to our family dog at least once a week; twice as he got older. Eggs are full of protein, so I really have no objection to feeding them to my dogs now. So yes, at least 3 times a week, I will fry up a couple of eggs for the poocches. Through many taste tests, I found that fried eggs with runny yolks are a favorite, especially since I mix it in with their dry food. It makes their dog kibble a little more exciting and nutritious. Though, of course, being dogs, they don’t really object to anything. I mean, Darla eats cat poop.
When it comes to human food, the boyfriend and I are actually very careful as to what goes into our pets’ bellies. Though Tiberious (the Norwegian Forest cat) will eat anything and has a strange fascination with lettuce, Willow (our other cat) despises people food. With one exception: tuna. But we still try to give them treats as well. Why should the pooches get all the fun?

Before you decide to feed your pets human food though, be sure of a couple of things:
1. Know what is toxic and what isn’t. This list from the Humane Society is a good place to start.

2. Like humans, obesity and over eating are dangers to your pets’ health. Remember, this is to treat your pet nutritiously. DO NOT feed them as you would feed a small child. I feed Darla 2 eggs with her regular dry food amount; Thor gets 1 since he is so much smaller. Use common sense. The cats get 1 can of tuna between them and other treats, such as the vanilla mousse, is measured out in tablespoons, never bowls.

3. Don’t over do it.

This isn’t Garfield and lasagna- always remember that those little furry creatures are entirely dependent on you when it comes to their food. Also, you don’t want to create picky eaters. We learned that the hard way. Right now we are dealing with a boycott. Apparently, Mommy didn’t buy the kind of food they like. But like my mother did with me, they will either eat or not.
