Hump Day Treats

I have fallen into the trap. I finally relented and decided to give homemade dog biscuits a try. Though Thor and Darla aren’t really big on treats, I figured I have some free time on my hands, so why not? This morning I saved the bacon grease from breakfast and as soon as I had the chance, got cooking.

The recipe I used is pretty basic; you can find it and others here. I added the bacon grease as an extra. The consistency of the dough was not much different than shortbread cookies ( albeit a little greaser and drier at the same time). All in all, it took about 10 minutes to finish the dough. After that, all I had to do was roll it out and cut it down to size.

A while back, I bought some cookie cutters at IKEA. They were, like 75 cents, so I figured why not. There will be a day I would need cutouts of furry forest animals…and today was the day. I cut up that dough into squirrels, moose, hedgehogs and wolves. Seemed appropriate. The dogs, as you can see, we’re dying with anticipation….

After baking them for 25 minutes in a 350 preheated oven, they were ready. The pups were wagging their tails as the boyfriend and I gave them another bacon coat as they cooled. I was worried though, since Thor is notoriously picky about his treats. I wouldn’t have put it past him to turn up his imperial little nose at these treats as well.

Turns out, Mommy had nothing to worry about. Not only did Darla love them (big surprise there), I didn’t even have to worry about vacuuming up the crumbs: Thor liked them so much he happily cleaned up after his sister!
